Satya Mandal is a Professor of Construction and Head of PhD Programs at RICS School of Built Environment, Amity University, Noida responsible for spearheading research and quality assurance initiatives, apart from his teaching, research and academic support for program development, conduct of examinations, development and implementation of internal quality assurance (iQA) systems for effective academic delivery, teaching and learning for faculty members in the department. He has a work experience of over 40 years, comprising of 34 years in NTPC / JPVL / Power Sector after an initial experience of about 6 ½ years in research, teaching and civil design & construction work. Prof. Satya Mandal is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (FRICS) and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers India.

He worked at JVPL from February 2011 to January 2015 as Senior Vice President responsible for design, engineering and support for implementation. During his work tenure at JPVL he was entrusted with the responsibility of civil, structural and foundation design & engineering work for the super critical thermal power projects at Nigrie and Bara and  construction quality of civil works for transmission lines associated with Nigrie . He was instrumental in saving the construction time, cost with enhanced quality of work by being a part of several problem solving exercises through value engineering and adoption of innovative construction / rectification techniques. Besides his job resposnsibilities he was entrusted with the task of skill building in the area of quality for civil works for the power projects under construction.

During his tenure of over 30 years at NTPC Ltd., largest Indian power generating company, he worked in areas of thermal power projects, combined cycle gas base power projects, hydroelectric power projects, as well as transmission lines and switchyard projects. The nature of work included planning, investigation & studies, design, pre-award and post-award engineering, preparation of DPR and Feasibility studies including hydrological and hydraulic routing studies, area drainage and flood mitigation studies using remote sensing data on GIS (Geographical Information System) software. He was responsible for development and implementation of quality assurance and quality control systems in thermal and hydro power projects including quality audit, assessment and approval of sub-vendors / sub-contractors for various thermal and hydroelectric projects of NTPC. 
  
He worked as the head of the foundation group, Civil Quality Assurance and transmission line consultancy groups, dealing with clients like Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), Kennedy & Donkin UK, EDF Energy France, BSES, DESU, MSEB and WBSEB and is credited with solutions of several critical problems related to pile foundations, machine foundations, flood mitigation, earth & rock fill for large dams and structural distresses, uneven settlement under large diameter DM Water tanks, seepage in CW pit and CEP pit and slope protection for wagon tippler and raw water reservoir associated with power plants.

He was responsible for several systems improvement exercises at NTPC, most notable being the ones during his tenure of heading the quality assurance group. He is one of the few professionals who continued their association with the academia during work tenure with industry, through the guest lectures at IIT Delhi and by being an external examiner from industry for PhD and M Tech students, apart from being a trainer at the Power Management Institute, the apex training and development institute of NTPC, designing, planning and supervising the training programs for the new entrants and the professionals working at sites, besides conducting several workshops for capability enhancement in QA & QC areas. He designed and compiled a Handbook on Quality Assurance for Civil Works aimed to educate / facilitate the site engineers, train young entrants and to create an all pervasive quality culture in civil works. He was designated as Champion of Knowledge Management initiatives at NTPC for building of technical and tactical knowledge bank based on his tacit knowledge for future reference of NTPC professionals. He worked closely with several institutions of repute like IITs, NCBM, CBIP, NIRM, CSMRS, CMRI, ISM Dhanbad for several problem solution exercises. He facilitated research projects and was invited as an external evaluator / examiner for a few of the PhD and M. Tech. projects from IITD & SPA, New Delhi and BITS Pilani. 

Owing to his expertise he is a serving member of the BIS sub-committee CED 29 / P1 responsible for formulation of IS 15883 Part 1 to 12 on Guidelines for Construction Project Management.

Notable Assignments as Internal Specialist
•    NTPC
  • Developed and implemented Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA&QC) system / norms for the Hydro Power projects for the first time in NTPC including structures like large earth and rock fill dam, tunnels, barrage, penstock & power house, de-silting arrangement etc. as well as civil & Structural works for Thermal Power Projects.
  • Study and finalization of flood mitigation and area drainage studies utilizing remote sensing data on GIS (Geographical Information System) software, finalized flood mitigation and protection measures for their implementation at Simhadri, Kahalgaon, Frakka, and Barh STPP. 
  • Finalized geo-technical parameters and provided technical support in deciding the founding level and sinking of an off shore intake well and jetties for Make - up Water System of Simhadri STPP of NTPC.
  • Evolved and implemented a suitable ground improvement technique for existing soft marine clay underlying the embankment supporting make up water pipelines and associated facilities at Simhadri, while the embankment filling work remained in progress due to compulsion of project commissioning schedule.
  • Evaluated geo-technical and seismic parameters of Talchar II to evolve measures for implementation of suitable foundation system for the geological features encountered below unit 4, 5 & 6 of Talchar II.
  • Assessed / evaluated geo-technical parameters and evolved suitable type of foundation system having a combination of open / shallow and pile/ deep foundation due to abrupt and large variation in depths of rock layers within short stretch under the main plant building of Rihand II.
•    JVPL
  • Implemented concrete structures up to the operating floor as against conventional steel structures in turbine hall, first of its kind in the country at Nigrie, needed a very careful idealization and detailing of structures.
  • Adoption of precast concrete main beam elements at Bara, as against conventional cast-in-situ concrete beams for Track Hopper, first of its kind in the country resulting in savings of cost and time.
  • Adoption of pre-cast concrete columns as auxiliary columns with hinged connection at the base / foundation pedestals in turbine hall of Bara STPP.
  • Use of rock anchors for underground clarified water tanks with metal proflex sheeting at the roof, as against a conventional RCC columns & beams with flat roof, resulting in a substantial cost and time savings.
  • Provided an effective technical solution to several constructional problems like
  • Uneven settlements / tilting of large diameter DM water tanks at Nigrie, Bulging of side slopes of Raw Water Reservoir, Seepage of water from Raw Water reservoir, CW Pit, CE Pits at Nigrie, Slope protection by soil nailing to the railway embankment abutting 30 M deep excavation for Wagon Tipplers at Nigrie.
