An RICS accredited degree is synonymous with the highest quality of education, benchmarked as per international standards in education and teaching and is therefore valued by companies. Course accreditation relies on experienced RICS academics and employers assessing each university’s programme to ensure there is both an appropriate curriculum and the resources in place to enable the delivery of the programme to meet the high standards demanded by RICS.

Each university is visited every few years by RICS auditors. The RICS external quality assurance system monitors the standards of graduates annually and each programme is monitored annually through an annual report. Each accredited course in an educational institution is expected to meet five quality principles:

The accreditation process is highly valued by universities. RICS aims to ensure that graduates have a stimulating and challenging education, which prepares them well for their professional careers.

There are two main types of RICS qualifications – Associate (AssocRICS) and Chartered (MRICS): Associate is the entry-level RICS qualification and offers the chance to progress to full chartered status. Chartered is the most common way to qualify as most people already have surveying-related qualifications and work experience. To qualify as an Associate or Chartered member, you will have to pass a series of assessments. RICS involves members updating their knowledge and ability during their working life through ongoing professional growth.

• Honorary members may use “HonRICS” after their names.

How to become an MRICS?

Once you have accomplished an accredited degree, the next step is to get a job as a trainee. To become a member of RICS (MRICS) you need to complete your Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) which includes completing a period of structured training with an employer. Structured training generally takes between two to three years and comprises on-the-job learning and assessment.
