Raja Subramanya
Civil Engineer
MBA CPM 2014-16
Placed as Quantity Surveyor at Laing O'Rourke

Since childhood Raja Subramanya found ancient monuments very fascinating and wanted to be a civil engineer. After graduating with a B.tech in civil engineering he did his MBA in Construction Project Management. His decision to specialize certainly paid off for him as he got placed with Laing O Rourke in Dubai!

This is what he has to say about his journey from a civil engineer to being hired as a quantity surveyor
After graduating I started working as a junior engineer but soon I realized that just a B.Tech in civil engineering would not help me climb the corporate ladder. Meanwhile, I got to know about RICS SBE from a friend who had enrolled in the first batch. He told me about the courses being taught here by a faculty that was from the industry and I knew that an MBA in CPM would catalyze the knowledge and growth in my civil engineering domain.

My learning at RICS SBE
Learning at RICSSBE has always being enriching and multidisciplinary. The techno-managerial design of the curriculum has helped me gain technical and management aspects in the construction domain. The guest lectures organized for subjects like construction planning and project control as well in lean construction gave us insights as to its functions in the real scenario. We got opportunities for regular interactions with industry people so that we were always aware of what the industry needed, market trends etc.

My internship
I had my first exposure of working in the corporate world when I interned with Knight Frank in their Project Management Services vertical. It was during my internship that I got to see the practical application of what we had been taught by our professors. I assisted the Documentation & Process Control Manager in tracking, updating progress of project reports, updated progress report trackers, BD trackers and payment trackers, prepared schedules in MSP, carried out vendor development process, prepared profiles of PMS staff for client presentation, did site monitoring and measurement of different work packages. The internship ensures that you are familiarized with what is expected of you and don’t feel like a fish out of water when you join your job.

A dream placement
The school has a very detailed and extensive placement process. After our mock interviews, soft skill developments and counseling sessions we were ready for our actual interviews. A large number of companies come on campus during placements and one is spoilt for choice. I applied to Godrej Properties, Shapoorji Pallonji Company Ltd. and Laing O Rourke. I could hardly believe that my hard work had paid off so soon, as Laing O Rourke hired me as a quantity surveyor for their Dubai office at a very good salary.
My future plan is to work hard and gain experience. Along with that I will prepare for my MRICS as that will be instrumental in helping me to rise fast and become a Commercial Director.
